Adelaide to Penola
Approx. 382 km / 4 hours 15 mins
Pick up your car this morning for the beginning of your Great Ocean Road self-drive. The nearby
lakes and waterways in Coonawarra are perfect for fishing and enjoying the distant views of the
Grampians National Park.

As mentioned previously we kept the 4X4 and head out after a breakfast from Gloria Jean's coffee and a sausage roll.

We make a detour so we can cross the Murray River.

We are now driving through a lot of farm land.

A stop in Keith for a break and lunch, fish and chips which we eat outside at a picnic table.

We share the seafood pack, I don't recommend the sea shanty. I later google it and found this.

Back on the road and we are soon driving along the ocean.

We take a break and go for a stroll.

Some more detours.

Accommodation:
Merlot Verdelho Townhouse Penola
14 Arthur Street,
Penola SA 5277

Merlot Verdelho Townhouses are superior luxury situated in the heart of the Coonawarra Region.
Merlot (a Red Grape variety) is decorated with a maroon influence and Verdelho (a White Grape
variety) is decorated with a green influence. The properties are designed to accommodate
couples or groups. With excellent location in the centre of Penola the site offers off street parking,
with security coded keyless entry into the property and inside the townhouses.

Well, we find the townhouse, but it is gated and has a keypad but no one around to help. There are two townhouses here, one is Merlot the other is Verdelho. We go across to the hotel and ask around but no one knows who can help but suggest we head to the tourist office just down the street. It is 5 PM and she is just closing up but says she thinks the code is 2468 and that we are about the fourth people to arrive with the same issue. She makes a phone call, I am guessing to the cleaner, who confirms the code is 2468 and that we are staying in Merlot.

We decide to go to the grocery store and see what we can get for dinner. Perfect, roast chicken and potato salad.

We settle in for the evening and watch a CANADIAN move, no less, called The Great Seduction.

  1. The beach view is amazing. That lighthouse is quite unusual.
